There was a case couple of years ago, local (to me), about two children who were out playing in a park alone less than a mile from home, ages six and ten. I am sure I have been influenced by the current state of parenting, and stories seen in the media. Why do I feel this way? I know when I was five I was running a few houses down to a friend's house, and going all over the neighborhood. This is sad but if the view of my yard is obstructed, I won't let my youngest go out there without someone watching her. I'm not even sure about letting very young children play in the yard alone. Now that I have three children of my own I will admit, I am not thrilled to let them go off on their own down the street to the park. The internet and social media being the main one.īut what about playing outside? And stranger abduction? There are new dangers and challenges we did not have growing up back in the 80's. What I found led me to realize my husband was right, kids are safer today than they used to be. Once I was pregnant and getting ready to have a baby, I decided to research how safe are children right now, compared to when we were growing up? are children less safe today than when we were growing up in the 80s? There are many places in the world where children are not safe.īut, here at home the debate rages on. Now let me preface this by saying I am talking about children in the United States. I felt they had to be because look at all the horror stories on the news, and look at how much less children play outside today.Īt least on their own, compared to when we were kids. I argued yes, and he said no statistically they are not. Before I had children my husband and I used to debate, are kids less safe today than when we were growing up?
